Index. 236 pp. Mortimer Wheeler (1890- 1976) was a famed archaeologist and also a noted celebrity through his many television appearances particularly on the series Animal, Vegetable and Mineral, which did much to arouse interest in his subject. The sub-title has a quaintly period flavour appropriate to Wheeler who liked to portray himself as an Edwardian eccentric. Starting his excavations in England he moved to Wales and after W W2 to India as Director of the Archaeological Survey of India. By then he had developed the Wheeler Method and established himself as one of the leading archaeologists of the 20th century. His interests were varied (he served in both World Wars) and his life not without controversy both personally and professionally. This makes for a fascinating and entertaining volume of Memoirs. This copy signed by the author £150.
